In Gear Career - Military Spouse Volunteer of the Month - Jennifer Simpson

Meet Jennifer Simpson

Jennifer blazed a professional path across the U.S. with a shining trail that followed her to Sicily, where she leads a team of six employees and started up the local In Gear Career chapter in January 2013.

After one tour active duty in the Navy (where she met her husband) Jennifer was honorably discharged and started the great adventure as a military spouse – now going on seventeen years strong!

Jennifer obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business Administration while juggling two little ones in diapers, three permanent duty station moves, her husband’s three deployments and a full-time job. After her first position in finance, she maneuvered herself into financial sector positions at each new duty station. Currently, she is a Supervisory Senior Analyst for Wittenberg Weiner Consulting at NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella, where she focuses on budget formulation and execution and automating systems to maximize efficiencies.

She has been stationed in various locations across the U.S., including Texas, Hawaii, Tennessee, California, Washington, Illinois, Colorado, and Virginia, and now is on her second military spouse tour in Sigonella, Sicily.

With so many moves, developing a professional career was difficult. Jennifer credits her success to her self-motivation and saying “yes” to every opportunity. She is passionate about supporting military spouse employment and professional development; she wants to share her lessons learned with today’s up-and-coming military spouses, as well as continue her professional development and support a professional military spouse network.

As the Sigonella Chapter’s Events Coordinator, Jennifer helps make sure the chapter is available to spouses at each point in their career development. She also ensures that Sigonella’s events deliver tangible takeaways for the attendees, be it a digital headshot, advice from a hiring professional, or a Passport to Success. Volunteering with In Gear Career is a meaningful way that Jennifer can pay it forward to the military community and support spouses facing the struggles she overcame in her career development.

Jennifer has two amazing sons who are quickly approaching their teenage years. When not working or volunteering with In Gear Career, she actively volunteers with her children’s activities in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and the local swim team.

February Military Spouse Volunteer of the Month

In Gear Career is able to provide our services because of wonderful Military Spouses who understand what it means  to serve.  Many people contribute to our collective success, but this month we would like to recognize Laura Burt for her work editing the content for our website.  She graciously offered to read and proof the articles on our website for errors.   Ensuring our material is error free helps establish our credibility and communicate more effectively.  She spent a considerable amount of time helping us and we can’t thank her enough.

Laura has been an Army wife for almost 11 years. Along the way she earned a Bachelors in English and a Certificate in Editing, and really enjoys volunteering to produce quality written materials for military service organizations. Her passions often combine in incredible ways: her previous job was as a writer and editor for the Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Command, creating Letters of Condolence for families of Fallen Soldiers. Every day was emotionally challenging but immensely rewarding, and her team of researchers and writers were dedicated to honoring the memory of each Soldier’s life by providing families with this one simple–but deeply meaningful–letter. In her spare time, she assisted Wounded Warriors from Ft. Knox by facilitating hippotherapy (horseback) treatment at a local stable. Now, she serves the Joint Base Lewis-McChord community by providing access control to the installation. Interacting with Soldiers, Airmen, Reserve, Retirees, and Family members every day reminds her of the incredible community we in the Armed Forces share. She is proud and blessed to be included in this extended family.

Volunteer of the Month

In Gear Career is able to provide our services because of wonderful Military Spouses who understand what it means  to serve.  Many people contribute to our collective success, but this month we would like to recognize Kelly Schwark for her work photographing Military Spouses for our website.  She graciously spent an afternoon with the Spouses from the West Point Local Chapter to capture them in professional settings.  She then edited and donated all of the photos for use on this site.  Many of the photos you see on this site are real Military Spouses in  action.  In addition, each Spouse photographed received a free professional head shot.

Kelly became an Army wife in 2001 and has been enjoying how her roles as artist, mother and wife always blur together and often overlap…  she loves that!  The military lifestyle taught her to strive to capture the emotion and sentiment in the moment; to appreciate every second that we are blessed to have on this earth.  Please check out her work http://kellyschwark.zenfolio.com.
